My Job Experience

Since March 2025, I have worked as an Administrative Assistant II to the Dean of the College of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics at Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, NC.
Some of my responsibilities include:
Provide comprehensive administrative support to the Dean, managing calendars, scheduling meetings, coordinating travel arrangements, and “putting out little fires.”
Screen incoming calls and emails to prioritize messages, direct them to the appropriate recipient, and respond in a timely manner
Coordinate logistics for College events, including research symposiums, meetings, interviews, and student-centered events.
Create an Administrative Tasks procedure manual to distribute to faculty and staff in the Fall
Manage the College’s Teams group, to include adding important files, communicating on the Dean’s behalf, and scheduling faculty and staff meetings
Assist the Dean and Search Committee (s) with hiring processes, from the initial application to hire.

This internship was through the North Carolina Department of Administration’s State of NC Internship Program from the beginning of May to the end of July of 2023. This internship made me strongly consider career counseling as a future career, but I later reconsidered.
Completed a 12-week summer internship program, gaining hands-on experience in the career advising and state government fields
Assisted with various projects and tasks under the guidance of senior team members, including the NEXTGEN Summer Internship Program (from screening students for participation to graduation from their internships)
Developed strong problem-solving skills through real-world challenges and assignments
Utilized software tools such as Microsoft Office Suite and the NCWorks Online System for data entry, analysis, and reporting purposes
Created flyers and forms for the NEXTGEN Summer Program

This was a fantastic opportunity I had during my second year at ECU (August 2022 to May 2023), and I look back on it fondly often. I wish I had handled some things differently, but I learned more important lessons in this position than in any others so far. Some of my responsibilities included:
Planned and held several events for my residents (a total of 10 events for the year)
Managed crises as they occurred
Answered questions from both residents and parents
Provided resources to residents when they needed help or guidance
Worked on a team of 13 to make sure the whole building was a safe and welcoming environment
Developed my communication, teamworking, crisis management, event planning, professionalism, and leadership skills
Created event flyers and coordinated logistics with my team
